Strong winds (and more) to kick off 2020

We're tracking wind, snow, and rising water

There is a lot going on weather wise this New Year's Eve.

To start, we've seen wind gusts over 80 miles per hour on the Rocky Mountain Front.

We expect winds to remain very strong overnight and at least through the morning hours on New Year's Day.

That brings mixed news for those heading out to celebrate.

You'll have to deal with the gusty winds, but those same winds will keep our temperatures very warm.

Temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s as we turn over to 2020, and will remain in the 30s and 40s for New Years Day.

In addition to wind, we're also tracking mountain snow, and some rain at lower elevations.

Rain showers will be scattered and light, and with little impact, but up to a foot of snow may fall along the divide through Wednesday evening.

That, combined with strong winds, will make for very difficult travel over the passes.

The Little Belts will also see heavy snow, with 5 to 10 inches possible.

To top all that off, the city of Great Falls may see some flooding thanks to an ice jam on the Missouri River.

The river has risen around 4 feet since Saturday, and flooding will be possible along River Road; click here for details .
