Helena Based chemical manufacturing company Diamond Products has offered some tips on the proper way to clean surfaces to limit the spread of COVID-19 and other germs.
Firstly, when using a disinfectant always let it set for 10 minutes before wiping it off.
“Whether it’s a spray disinfectant, whether it’s something you mix, whether it’s a hospital grade, they need to be sprayed and left,” said KC Cordiner, Diamond Products general manager. “We call it a 10 minute kill, they call it a 10 minute dwell. For any hard surface you have, you have to have 10 minutes for it to do its job.”
It’s recommended upon returning home to clean each surface that was touched before you have a chance to thoroughly wash your hands.
Door handles in particular should be cleaned every time a person returns homes from going out.
“We’re disinfecting our door handles about every half hour,” said Cordiner. “Make sure your hands are regularly washed; soap and hot water and don’t touch your face.”
Diamonds Products reports seeing a big influx of people looking for cleaning products in the past couple weeks. As a manufacturer, they’ve been able to keep up with that demand for what they can make in house.
“We don’t have a shortage of [disinfecting products] right now,” said Cordiner. “Our paper towels and toilet paper, our vendor that we get that from-- we have very, very little left. I was lucky to get 25 cases of emergency toilet paper for our community.”
Cordiner described the current status as “looking at what’s there, seeing who needs what and who needs it most.”
Customers are limited to buying a limited amount of hand sanitizer right now to make sure there’s enough for everyone, and key community partners like the Helena Police Department won’t face a shortage.
Diamond Products would also like to stress that people should only use any cleaning product as instructed on the bottle.
Never mix chemicals together. Depending on the compound, gases can be created that can cause serious injury or even death.
Diamond Products is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. People are encouraged to call in to the store at (406) 449-6570 to see if the product they’re looking for is in stock.
