MISSOULA — The owners of Flying Squirrel Missoula say it's the hardest announcement to make -- but they're going to have to close permanently after all.
Founder and COO Luke Schueler says the mandatory COVID-19 pandemic closure period caused significant financial strain. And after being unable to negotiate with the building's owner, the company has to close.
Schueler says Missoula was the smallest market where they've opened a Flying Squirrel gym but as a Montana native, he felt it provided Western Montana a new option for family fun and exercise.
They had hoped to find a way to stay open but just can't do it. Schueler also expressed frustration as he feels there has been no meaningful relief for small businesses struggling in the pandemic.
Flying Squirrel has gyms open in several other countries. They hope to one day open again in Missoula.
