If you were saving your pennies to buy your own private island and mansion on Flathead Lake, someone beat you to it. Engel & Volkers broker Dawn Maddux announced recently that the property on Shelter Island has been sold to an anonymous buyer.
The listing price was just under $14 million but the final sale price hasn’t been disclosed. However, the sale does mark the highest closed real estate transaction on Flathead Lake.
The property sits on a 22-acre private island, while the house itself is 22,000-square feet. The main house has five bedrooms and eight bathrooms and every detail represents high-end luxury.
There’s also a wine cellar, target range, and a giant library with a 45-foot ceiling in the great room. There’s also a boat house, guest house, and a cabin.

Walking into a jaw dropping 45-foot ceiling great room with a second story observatory would be enough for most people.
However, with a top of the line kitchen, a library made for the biggest book nerd, and a master bedroom with beautiful mountain views, one can start to imagine the scale of this mansion.
With 22,000 square feet of beautiful home, realtor Dawn Maddux said she has more than one favorite part.
“On a beautiful day, I really love that look-out. I think that’s so amazing to be up there. I could stay up there all day. The master bathroom just had a special place in my heart with that marble… it’s from one specific relatively small quarry out of Italy,” Maddux said. “I think that’s amazing. The master bedroom and I love the atrium. How could you not love that?”
The basement wine cellar has enough room to hold the biggest collections. If you’re in need of some target shooting, just take the elevator down to the target range. There are also 3-inch thick African mahogany doors, a fireplace in nearly every room, and light fixtures designed out of Kalispell.
“The details are amazing and all the finishes are amazing, but just as much time was put in the infrastructure of the house,” Maddux said. “All the electricity is run through the lake. The lake water is UV treated through reverse osmosis before it goes back into the lake and I think it fits well here.”
Lets not forget this home is on an island.
With six boating docks, a walking path equipped with skeet shooting stands and the clear water of Flathead Lake, it all makes for the perfect combination to enjoy the outdoors.
Despite the beauty of the large estate, it has been empty for a few years which has given project manager Casey Yarger plenty of time to listen to passing boaters.
“You can hear on the water — sound travels, so you can hear them talk. They all have a different story on how this occurred. I’ve heard it all – from famous people own it to some guy that’s the president. People tell all sorts of stories… sometimes I’ll play into it,” Yarger said.
The materials to build the home on Shelter Island were brought by barge to the island when real estate mogul Don Abbey started the construction in 2001.
