(MISSOULA) A student has been cited for bringing a gun to school in Arlee earlier this week.
Lake County Sheriff Don Bell said Friday the school resource deputy assigned to Arlee schools was told Wednesday morning that a child had brought a gun to school on the bus.
The deputy was told by school administrators that the weapon was taken from the child and that there was no longer any imminent danger, according to Bell.
The deputy responded to the school, secured the weapon, and determined there was no immediate threat to the safety of others at the school.
Bell said that the child had already been sent home with a parent before school resource Deputy Clay Shoemaker arrived at the school.
The child and parent were interviewed by Shoemaker at the child’s home and a misdemeanor citation for possession of a weapon in a school building was issued.
The child was left in the custody of the parent and the Montana Department of Family Services was notified of the incident, according to Bell.
The youth was not arrested because the misdemeanor crime doesn’t fall under the criteria stated in the Montana Code, Bell explained.
