Lewis & Clark County Commission could give final approval to zoning plan Thursday

The Lewis and Clark County Commission is meeting Thursday morning to take a final vote on the long-debated plan for county-initiated zoning in the Helena Valley.

Commissioners could officially approve a resolution to create three new zoning districts – one urban, one suburban and one rural – across the southern part of the county, and to implement regulations in those districts on things like allowable land uses and building heights.

They will also vote on setting up a panel – including property owners, builders and other stakeholders – to work on possible alternatives to a proposed 10-acre minimum lot size in the rural district, the most contentious part of the zoning plan. Commissioners agreed last month that they would delay implementing that provision until June 2022 to give the panel time to come up with other options.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday. It will be held at the Great Northern Hotel in Helena to allow for more distancing. Because of COVID-19 guidelines, the county will only allow 50 people to attend in person, and everyone who attends will be required to wear a mask or face shield. County leaders are encouraging people to participate virtually using Zoom.

If you want to take part in the meeting, you can find more information on the county website.
