HELENA – The Montana Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Carroll College and St. Peter’s Health Care System all joined forces to educate the community on common issues that returning veterans and their families face.
The groups put on a Thursday training, “Wounds of War,” in which topics included post-deployment readjustment challenges, psychological and behavioral effects of war trauma on survivors.
The VA has a mobile care station that travels throughout the state of Montana.
Anton Johnson, a U.S. Army Veteran and outreach program specialist, spoke with MTN to shine some light on the importance of reaching out to veterans and their families.
Johnson stated, “The population we serve are combat veterans, veterans who’ve experienced military sexual trauma, their families, and some other small subsects like drone pilots or people who have worked in mortuary services. So, essentially, veterans who have experienced some serious trauma in their life and need special care.”
The Montana VA Health Care System serves an average of over 47,000 enrolled veterans across the state and nearly one-third of employees are veterans.
