The City of Helena Transfer Station is reminding the public that it’s Christmas Tree disposal season once again.

From January 1 through the end of February 2019, the City will pick up trees in the alley or on the boulevard within city limits.

All decorations must be removed before pick up. Staff caution that trees cannot be collected on private property.

Trees should not be placed in or touching a trash container, according to Transfer Station staff.

There are separate vehicles that pick up the trees and garbage truck crews say when a tree is too close to a container, it can make trash collection difficult.

The City wants people to know tree collection can happen at any time during the pickup period and the public is asked to leave their trees out even on non-garbage collection days.

The Transfer Station said people self-hauling their trees is greatly appreciated and there is no charge with a residential permit.

Tri-County Disposal will collect trees for their customers from from January 14-18.

It will be determined by the end of January what happens to the trees. The trees could potentially be used for perch habitat in Canyon Ferry or chipped to be used in city projects.

In 2018, the city of Helena diverted 32 tons of Christmas trees from the landfill.
