Helena city leaders will choose one of 11 candidates to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Helena City Commission.

On Friday, the city released the names and cover letters of the people who applied to replace Rob Farris-Olsen on the Helena City Commission:

  • Brian Barnes
  • Emily Dean
  • Harold Fossum
  • Michael Hekman
  • Sam Hunthausen
  • Keri Jaynes
  • Kevin Keeler
  • Sumner Sharpe
  • Shawn Storm
  • Greg Thomas
  • Kali Wicks

Farris-Olsen will resign from the city commission on Dec. 17, after he was elected to represent House District 79 in the Montana Legislature.

Whenever there is a vacancy on the commission, the remaining members – including the mayor – appoints someone to fill the seat until the next city election.

On Nov. 26, the commission will review the candidates’ applications and resumes, then choose a list of finalists. They will interview each finalist on Dec. 4. They could make a final selection later in the month.

The new commissioner will serve the last year of Farris-Olsen’s term. They could then choose to run for a full four-year term in the 2019 city elections.

You can find each candidate’s application on the city website (https://www.helenamt.gov/home/news-item/article/city-commission-vacancy-candidates-cover-letter-and-resumes.html). You can also find a link there if you would like to submit public comment on the applicants.
