Lewis and Clark County voters will choose a new member of the county commission this year. MTN is introducing you to the four candidates running for the open seat.
This is the first year that county commission candidates filed for a single, nonpartisan primary – after voters approved a switch to nonpartisan elections last year. The top two finishers in the June 2 primary will move on to the general election in November.
The four candidates are running for the commission position representing District 2, which includes parts of central Helena and the Helena Valley, along with the Augusta area. Incumbent Susan Good Geise is not running for a second term.
The primary will be held as a mail ballot election, as a response to the threat of COVID-19. Ballots will be mailed out to Lewis and Clark County voters on May 8. They must be returned by June 2.
Candidates:
Brady Christensen: Brady Christensen is a manager with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. He says he wants county government to find good solutions for all residents, and that his experience gives him the skills to do that.
Mike Fasbender: Mike Fasbender is a real estate investor, and restores and sells vehicles. He says he wants to bring an entrepreneurial perspective to the county commission and address land use without restricting property owners.
Tom Rolfe: Tom Rolfe has had a long career in auto sales. He says the county needs leaders who can deal with budget instability and make solid plans, especially after the uncertainty of the COVID-19 emergency.
Tyrel Suzor-Hoy:
Tyrel Suzor-Hoy works for the Montana Department of Transportation and owns small businesses. He says he wants to make sure county government is focusing on the future, particularly in planning for upcoming growth.
