River City Harvest needs volunteers

River City Harvest is a nonprofit that operates community gardens in the Great Falls area; they currently have five gardens and two greenhouses.

They provide gardening space for the Salvation Army, Great Falls Community Food Bank, and others.

They are asking for volunteers to help with the gardening duties. We spoke with Janice Driver, who's the president of River City Harvest, and she says gardening is a life skill.

She said, "Everybody needs to learn how to produce their food. We never know, and we know now that we don't know what is going to happen. And if you don't know what to do with a few seeds, it could make the difference in your life or death."

Driver also said that knowing how much your food costs is essential: "I also think that it's essential, and we've lost sight of this. We don't realize the actual cost of the food we eat. So when you grow one, you can understand that a lot better. It's quite expensive, and it helps you appreciate fresh food, fresh food is essential."

If you want to volunteer, you can call Jane Krezowski, the garden manager, for more information at 406-453-1155. You can also email rivercityharvestgf@gmail.com for more information, or click here to visit the website.
