The Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training Council, or POST, reinstated former Cascade County Sheriff Bob Edwards' Law Enforcement Certificate this week.
Edwards was stripped of his certification after being charged with misdemeanor assault in Helena in 2017.
Edwards entered a deferred prosecution agreement with the City of Helena.
But in reviewing the incident, the Montana POST Council found that that alcohol, a physical altercation, and a gun were all factors in the incident between Edwards and his girlfriend.
In April of 2018, Edwards was ordered to surrender his certification.
On Wednesday, the Montana POST Council, ruled that Edwards' certificates will be reinstated, so long as he doesn't re-enter law enforcement, in a street-level capacity.
Those conditions don't prevent him from running for public office.
Edwards lost his position as Sheriff after losing to challenger and current Cascde County Sheriff Jesse Slaughter in the 2018 Montana primary.
