Today the Hi-Line climbing center brought back Rocktober, an indoor climbing competition for all ages.

Young climbers started working on their routes at 10 a.m. as volunteers judged their footwork.

The competition allows rock-climbing tenderfoots like Connor Svingen to challenge themselves.

“I’ve been doing rock climbing for like, I think a year now and it’s really lots of fun. And it works your upper core and everything. That’s what I love about it,” Svingen said.

Svingen stepped into the sport one year ago and has advanced from a recreational climber to a competitive one.

“I didn’t like it at first because it was hard. But then after I’d been doing it, it was fun and I like it a lot,” Svingen said.

The young climber now competes on the Hi-Line’s Youth Competitive Team.

This Rocktober marked Svingen’s third competition, one that challenged his abilities and kept him striving towards success.

“I’ve been getting a solid good score,” Svingen said.

His favorite memory from today’s competition was facing Route 30, a rough climb he hopes to master by the end of the day.

Although Rocktober wrapped up Saturday afternoon, the Hi-Line has climbing teams and classes available to the public throughout the year.
