GREAT FALLS — Work on a project that could be a big money-saver for Great Falls is underway at the city’s water treatment plant, as the filters at the plant are being upgraded.
Phase one of the project was just wrapping up Thursday, according to Great Falls Public Works Director Paul Skubinna.
Replacing the filters will allow the drainage system underneath to be replaced, saving the city millions of gallons of water a year used to clean the filters.
The old filters were several years past their expected lifespan and had not been performing as efficiently as they should.
"It's just an opportunity for us to improve the efficiency of our plant and hopefully decrease our operational costs a little bit so we can keep our rates in check and keep them from continuing to escalate at a faster pace,” Skubinna said of the project.
The entire project is expected to cost $14 million and be completed over the next two to three years.
