Crash kills one person in Great Falls

A man died in a crash in Great Falls on Monday evening.

The crash happened at about 8:18 p.m. near the 2800 block of River Drive North.

Cascade County Sheriff Jesse Slaughter said in a news release on Tuesday that the man who died has been identified as 21-year old Dalton James Derby of Great Falls.

There was a large response to the scene from the Great Falls Police Department, Great Falls Fire Rescue, Great Falls Emergency Services, the Montana Highway Patrol, and the Cascade County Sheriff's Office.

The Montana Highway Patrol and the Great Falls Police Department are continuing to investigate the crash.

No other details have been released at this point; we will update you if we get more information.



(UPDATE, 10:27 a.m.) The Great Falls Police Department says that the crash happened just east of the 25th Street intersection. The vehicles involved were a black Chevy pickup, which was westbound on River Drive, and an eastbound gold Buick passenger car, driven by Derby, with the crash occurring in the westbound lane of traffic.

Derby died at the scene, according to the GFPD. A male passenger from the car, the female driver of the pickup, and a male passenger in the pickup were taken by ambulance to a hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The GFPD, the Sheriff's Office, and the MHP are continuing to investigate; at this time, they do not know if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
