HAMILTON — A man accused of a fatal shooting in Stevensville that happened early Christmas morning appeared in a Ravalli County courtroom on Monday.
Trevor Matthew Looney, 33, of Stevensville has been charged with deliberate homicide as well as a felony drug charge in connection with the death of 39-year-old John Harvey Komotios.
Ravalli County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an address on 5th Street in Stevensville shortly after midnight on Dec. 25. Looney allegedly shot Komotios several times with a handgun; Komotios died at the scene.
Court documents state that Looney called 9-1-1 and reported that 'there had been a shooting and that 'I shot him' that 'he tried to kill me'." An investigation determined Looney knew Komotios from the time the two served together in jail.
A pair of handguns were found when a search warrant was executed at an apartment on 5th Street. Four shell casings were found as well as four bullets that had "penetrated interior walls of the apartment," according to court documents.
The State Medical Examiner determined the victim, Komotios, had suffered two bullet wounds as he tried to flee the apartment.
A witness also told a Ravalli County Sheriff's Office Sergeant that Looney "was smoking and snorting methamphetamine and was 'high'," according to court documents.
Bail was set at $250,000 for Looney during a Monday appearance in a Hamilton courtroom.
