Broadwater County Sheriff’s deputies continue to interview witnesses on Thursday as they investigate the crash of a small plane that left two men critically injured.

Broadwater County Sheriff Wynn Meehan said both men were from Gallatin County and in their mid-30’s.

The plane crashed into a creek bank about two miles south of Townsend between the Missouri River and Highway 287, according to Meehan.

One of the men was flown Helena, then to a hospital in Salt Lake City for treatment. The other was taken to a hospital in Great Falls.

Meehan did not have an update on their conditions.

He said the plane took off from Belgrade on Wednesday afternoon, then landed briefly at an airstrip near Townsend before taking off again.

The plane hit power lines and crashed into a creek bank several miles south of town.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration registry, the plane is a 1956 Cessna 180, owned by Kestrel Leasing of Belgrade.
