HELENA – People have already started scoping out the merchandise of this weekend’s vehicle and heavy equipment state surplus auction.

At the annual auction, you’ll find snowmobiles, riding lawnmowers, tractors, cars, trucks and just about any mode of transportation and a few other odds and ends. The equipment comes from state agencies and organizations who no longer will use it, but it could still serve a use to others.

Program Manager Tama Lutkso said there are 390 items up for sale this year – 200 of which are vehicles. Most of the vehicles are still fully functional.

“For various reasons, these items have reached the end of their useful life to the state, but that doesn’t mean their isn’t still some life left in them,” Lutkso said.

The live auction is a no-reserve auction, so every item will sell to the highest bidder, according to Lutkso. The net proceeds for the auction will be returned to the state agencies who previously owned the equipment.

The auction begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday September 29, but you can register as early as 7:30 a.m. Registration must be done in person.

On Friday, the public can also look at the merchandise ahead of the auction between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The auction site is located at 16 West Custer Avenue in Helena.
