HELENA — This week’s One Class at a Time recipient is Eastgate Elementary kindergarten teacher Alyssa Salerno.

Salerno is helping her young students learn through dynamic play.

Members of First Interstate Bank were joined by KXLH to surprise her at Eastgate Elementary with a $250 check.

The money will be used to buy items that will go with a sensory light table to help the students explore numbers, letters and science.

Salerno says playing opportunities are some of the best tools for learning in a kindergarten classroom.

“There’s so much research that says kids learn best through play at this age,” said Salerno. “Just getting them some opportunities to have some meaningful learning would be great.”

Salerno told MTN she is grateful for the support, and loves that this grant allows her to address a specific need in her classroom.

For more than a decade, First Interstate Bank and MTN have partnered for the One Class at a Time grant. The mission of the grant is to foster educational opportunities for local teachers and students.

A panel of retired teachers and school officials select the grant recipients from a pool of submitted applications.
