HELENA — This week’s One Class at a Time recipient is Warren Elementary School teacher Allison Horne.
Horne is helping to foster reading habits in her young students.
Members of First Interstate Bank were joined by KXLH to surprise her at Warren Elementary with a $250 check.
The money will be used to buy novels of varying reading levels for the students.
Horne says first graders often read at different levels, and it’s important to continue to encourage the kids with new and engaging material.
“I think once they learn how to read, then it becomes exciting,” said Horne. “They start to understand the stories more, they follow the storyline and they just start really exploring reading in general.”
Horne added she really enjoys having the One Class at a Time grant program because it helps target a specific need in a classroom and fix it.
For more than a decade, First Interstate Bank and MTN have partnered for the One Class at a Time grant. The mission of the grant is to foster educational opportunities for local teachers and students.
A panel of retired teachers and school officials select the grant recipients from a pool of submitted applications.
