Spencer, MA (WCVB) — A Spencer firefighter had anup close and personal encounter with a bear earlier this week, and he said it wasn’t the first time.

Dave Hoyt shot video of the curious bear wandering up onto his front steps.

He said the animal appeared to be looking around for food, then stared at him through a window before wandering away.

He said it’s not the first time he’s come face-to-face with a bear.

“Neighbor down the street called, told me Yogi was on his way to pay me a visit,” Hoyt said. “Ended up just walking through the driveway, right across the driveway like he owned the place.”

Hoyt said the bear was calm until he realized people were watching.

“Just sat on the front steps, checking out the bird feeders. Then he realized we were watching him through the window, and I don’t think he cared for the audience,” Hoyt said.

Hoyt said he also encountered a bear the following day walking around the city’s fire station.

Spencer town officials are asking residents to secure their trash and avoid using bird feeders.
